The ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Assessment Starts on March 5th for all K-12 LIEP Students

WIDA logo

The Virginia Department of Education has adopted the ACCESS for ELLs® 2.0 test and requires that it be administered annually to EL students K-12 to monitor their progress in acquiring English proficiency. The WIDA ACCESS for ELLs assessment will be administered to students beginning on March 5, 2018. Scores will be sent home for parents in June.

Students who achieve a Composite Score of a 4.4 or above will Exit the LIEP Program and be monitored by FCCPS staff for 4 years to ensure that they receive academic and/or language supports if necessary. Students who Exit the program will no longer be required to take the ACCESS for ELLs assessment.

Purpose and Use of ACCESS for ELLs 2.0

  • Helps students and families understand students’ current level of English language proficiency along the developmental continuum.
  • Serves as one of the multiple measures used to determine whether students are prepared to exit English language support programs. (Composite score of 4.4 or higher)
  • Generates information that assists in determining whether ELLs have attained the language proficiency needed to participate meaningfully in content area classrooms without program support.
  • Provides teachers with information they can subsequently use to enhance instruction and learning in programs for their English language learners.
  • Provides districts with information that will help them evaluate the effectiveness of their ESL/bilingual programs.
  • Meets, and exceeds, federal requirements for the monitoring and reporting of ELLs’ progress toward English language proficiency.
